Hazardous Pinch Point

To our valued customer:
This service bulletin is part of an ongoing effort to provide
quality service and support for all Alliance Machine Systems
International, LLC products. If you need assistance or more
information, please call Richard Daigle, Director Customer Service,
at 509-535-0356.
Description of Problem
The design of the Bobst/Martin 924 finishing machine features
large vertical air-handling structures on the drive side of the
upstream end of the machine. These structures will interfere with
the normal BPBF 50-97 prefeeder mainframe when the finishing machine
is opened, thus greatly reducing the space available for the
operators to install new plates between print sections of the 924.
To eliminate this interference and increase operator workspace
when the 924 is opened, Alliance modified the drive side of some
BPBF 50-97 prefeeder mainframes to provide a narrow clearance with
the 924 air-handling structure when the press is opened. Please
refer to Figure 1, which illustrates the clearance between the
prefeeder and the 924 in the fully-opened position. This is an
optional modification not present on all BPBF 50-97 feeders.
However, should any personnel be standing in this area when the
924 is opened, this narrow clearance can also represent a pinch
point hazard between these nested units as the 924 is moving. While
it is not common that personnel would be in this zone as the 924 is
opened, it is possible and thus represents a potential safety issue
that should be addressed.

Recommended Solution
Alliance recommends that customers take the following actions
within 90 days of receiving this safety bulletin, or within 90 days
of prefeeder installation.
-
Install a visual awareness device on the drive side of the
prefeeder mainframe to increase operator awareness that a pinch
point exists when the 924 is opened. Optionally, install floor
stripes per Figure 1 to indicate the limits of the hazard zone.
-
Advise all operators that a pinch point exists in this area,
and to avoid this area as the 924 is opened.
